National Donate Life Month

National Donate Life Month is a time set aside to honor the generous gifts of organ and tissue donation.  It’s also the perfect time to register as an organ and tissue donor and to encourage your friends and family to do the same.

Many of our volunteers and donor family members use this month-long observance to share their story and encourage their friends and community members to register as an organ and tissue donor.  Some people engage their local media by writing a letter to the editor of their local paper, others share information about their connection to donation in their place of worship or with other community organizations, and others simply help spread the message through their online or social networks.

How does one donate an organ when he dies at home?
Is there an upper age limit for a donation of any or all organs?
Is there an upper age limit for a recipient of an organ transplant??

  2. Becky says:

    Hi Keith,

Thanks for your questions! In order to be an organ donor a person must die in the hospital, having sustained a non-survivable head injury and be on a ventillator. So, a person who dies at home is not able to be an organ donor although they will still have options to save and heal lives through tissue donation – things like skin, bone, connective tissue, corneas, veins and heart valves.

There is no upper age limit for donation of organs – the oldest organ donor was nearly 93 years old. Donation depends more on a person’s health than age. As for an upper age limit for recipients, I’m not quite sure about that. LifeSource manages the donation process and is not involved in listing patients for transplant. You can contact UNOS (www.unos.org) or a local transplant center for more information on listing criteria.

    Thanks!
    Becky
