Hospital systems across Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota expand access to organ donor registration through MyChart
Minneapolis, Minn. (April 20, 2026) – Health care systems across Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota are expanding access to organ, eye and tissue donor registry directly within Epic’s MyChart patient portal. This enhancement makes it easier for patients to record their life-saving decision during moments when they are already managing their health.
The MyChart donor registration feature is part of a national collaboration between Epic and Donate Life America, designed to offer a simple, trusted pathway for individuals to register as organ, eye and tissue donors. When patients choose to register through MyChart, their decision is securely added to the National Donate Life Registry, ensuring it is honored no matter where they live or receive care.
“By integrating donor registration into MyChart, hospital systems are meeting patients where they already engage in their health care and offering a meaningful opportunity to save lives,” said Kelly White, Chief Executive Officer of LifeSource. “This is a powerful example of how technology can support patient choice, privacy and generosity.”

The donor registration feature is currently live for patients at the following hospital systems:
- Essentia Health
- M Health Fairview
- Mayo Clinic
- North Memorial Health
- Altru Health System
- Monument Health
- Sanford Health
Additional health systems are expected to enable the feature in the coming months.
How it works
Patients age 18 and older can register in just a few clicks using MyChart on a desktop computer or mobile device. Basic information already in the patient portal helps streamline the process. Patients may choose to donate organs and tissue for transplant, as well as for research and education purposes.

A patient’s decision to register as a donor is confidential and is not visible to health care teams. Donor registration information is only accessible to donation professionals when needed to honor the individual’s decision, when meeting the initial criteria to donate.
LifeSource, the non-profit organization that coordinates organ donation services across Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota, works closely with hospital partners to support donor families and carry out the wishes of registered donors.
“Families often share how grateful they are to know their loved one wanted to be an organ donor instead of being left with that decision to make on their behalf,” said Jason Villar, Vice President of Hospital Development and Family Care at LifeSource. “Adding donor registration through MyChart gives people another trusted way to make that choice clear and documented.”
Patients can register or update their decision at any time by logging into their MyChart account.
About Organ Donation: Facts & Statistics
- Organ donation is extremely rare. Only 1 percent of people who die get the opportunity to give those gifts. That’s due to a variety of medical and circumstantial criteria, including passing away at a hospital on ventilated support.
- It takes many people working in concert to make the donation process happen in a short period of time. Watch this video to learn more about the donation process.
- Over 100,000 people are on the national transplant waiting list – with about 2,300 people living in Minnesota. A new name is added to the waiting list every 8 minutes.
- One organ donor can save eight lives by donating organs; heal more than 75 lives by recovering tissue and restore sight for 2 individuals through eye donation.
