
Michael Goldstein
Dr. Michael Goldstein serves as the Director of the Division of Organ Transplantation at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) and represents Hackensack Meridian Health as the OPTN/UNOS surgical program director for adult and pediatric kidney transplantation and pancreas transplantation. At HUMC, he developed a transplant quality and patient safety program, leading the HUMC Division of Abdominal Organ Transplantation to become the center with the best 1-year kidney survival in the tristate area of NY, NJ, PA in 2019. Additionally, as Professor of Surgery at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, he educates on transplant immunology and transplant surgery.
Prior to Hackensack Meridian Health, Dr. Goldstein served as Chief of Kidney Transplantation at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the Executive Director of Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency (LAORA) where he directed the growth in Donation after Circulatory Determination of Death (DCD) in South Florida by 420%.
Dr. Goldstein was a consultant for the New York Organ Donor Network with positions on the Medical Advisory Board, Performance Improvement Committee, and the Kidney-Pancreas Subcommittee. Subsequently, he became the Medical Director of the New York Organ Donor Network and the Executive Director of LAORA to further champion efforts for improving organ donation.
Dr. Goldstein served as the Vice-Chair of the UNOS Organ Availability Committee and on the Medical Directors Council of AOPO. He worked nationally with HRSA to improve transplant center quality on the Transplant Center Task Force and Co-Chaired the National Learning Congress for the Organ Donation and Transplantation Community of Practice.
Dr. Goldstein’s research is focused on transplant outcomes, donor management, organ preservation and machine perfusion, and the changing nature and modernization of surgical education. He leads a team of researchers to improve the management of the deceased organ donor and enhance organ quality at both LAORA and the New York Organ Donor Network, with expertise in renal machine perfusion and organ preservation.
